Brasen Family – including Maunder

Under Construction

Many thanks to John Whinfield, Alan Maunder, John McCosker, Sharon McCarthy and David Christian for providing information on the extended Brasen – Waters – Maunder – McCosker  family.

1. John Joachim Frederick Brasen was born in 1836 Luebeck, Germany, and appeared to have arrived in Australia from Sweden via London in 10.12.1858 as an Unassisted Immigrant on the “Walter Hood”. He became a Storekeeper and Hotelkeeper in Collarenebri – according to their marriage certificate, birth certificates of their children and his death certificate.

In 1866 at “Colorindobri”, John married Elizabeth Mary Josephine Gibson (b. 1835 Pimlico, London, England – d. 1901 Collarenebri)  – NSW BDM 1866/03269 – Elizabeth was the daughter of John and Agnes Gibson.

Elizabeth had previously married Booth Rolliston, Bricklayer & Stockman, in 1856 – NSW BDM 1856/1800 – and had given birth to their  daughter Elizabeth Mary Rolliston in 1861 and their sons Albert William Rollinson, NSW BDM 1863/14426 and  Booth Anthony Rollison, NSW BDM 1865/16208.

It is possible that there was another daughter, according to the transcript of the birth record of Anthony Booth Rollinson and the death record of Booth Rollinson.

Elizabeth’s first husband Booth Rolliston died before the birth of their fourth child, Booth Anthony in late 1864 (NSW BDM 1864/06208).

John Joachim Frederick Brasen and Elizabeth Gibson-Rollinson-Brasen‘s descendants were as follows :

2.  John Thomas Brasen (1867 Collarenebri –  13.6.1956 Inverell – buried at Inverell Cemetery) m. 16.12.1890 in Collarenebri (Walgett) to Jane Waters (daughter of Charles Waters II and Mary Robinson) b. 1869 Terri Hie Hie NSW (refer her Death Certificate details) d. 27.1.1929 in Gunnedah – buried in Gunnedah Cemetery. No birth index found for Jane but mentioned on her mother’s death cert.

3. Charles Frederick Brasen b. 1891 Collarenebri d. 1944 Inverell – his obituary said he never married and there were no descendants given either.  Although other information suggests he may have married Minnie H Ragg 1920 – however this seems unlikely.

4. Madge Maunder b. 13-10-1927 m.  Donald Whinfield b. 21-12-1916 d. 22-08-1992

Note – Complicated Interconnections :

  • Albert Maunder’s grandfather was Thomas Maunder &  Albert’s uncle was William Maunder.
  • William had a son Eric Noel Stephen Maunder – whose son was Kevin Ross Maunder
  • Kevin  Ross married Mary Helen “Bid” Barden daughter of Cyril Bernard Barden & wife Ruby (nee McNamara) – click here for Barden tree.
  • Kerrie Anne Christian‘s father was also a son of Cyril Bernard Barden
  • William had another son Walter R Maunder  &  Walter’s grandson is married to a descendant of  First Fleeter Peter Hibbs via his daughter, Sarah Byrne nee Hibbs. And Kerrie Anne Christian’s husband David Christian is also a descendant of Sarah Byrne nee Hibbs
  • Now can you figure all that out ? Good luck if you can !
