Urquhart Family of Morayshire

Under Construction

Our Barden – Tulloch family lines also descend from the Urquhart’s of Morayshire, Scotland via Helen Tulloch nee Anderson.

Helen, with her husband James Haldon Tulloch, arrived  in the NSW Colony from Scotland  in early January 1839 on the Earl Durham.

Helen’s parents were Alexander Anderson and Margaret Urquhart, and it was understood that they were associated with Elgin and Forres in Morayshire.

Further, Helen’s Tulloch in-laws were known to have been at Rothes, though there were potential connections with Tulloch’s  of Orkney and Shetlands, off the north coast of Scotland.

It had been challenging to research much beyond Margaret Urquhart’s parents, however Ancestry Urquhart DNA matches in 2024 have information on much earlier generations of Margaret Urquhart’s ancestors.

Nevertheless it is going to take some time to work through and clarify the veracity of the information that came to light in March 2024, given the web of interconnecting old Scottish families, ie ancestors of ancestors of Marian Urquhart nee Cumming, wife of Robert Urquhart.

Planned Approach:

Consider creating additional web pages:

  1. Urquhart Ancestral Lines – various Family Trees
  2. Additional web pages for various candidate family lines, which may include:
  3. Cumming (Comyn) – which Cumming line do our Urquhart’s descend from Cumming’s of Craigmiln or Cumming’s of Duffus, Moray?
  4. An additional Tulloch line  – do our Tulloch’s descend from the Laird’s of Tannachie line – Gordon or not?
  5. Based on the outcomes of (3) and (4), then it may be necessary to further investigate the following, or not
    1. Duff – Grant – Douglas – Stewart – MacDonald lines
    2. Dunbar – Stewart lines
  6. Should there not be a connection to ancestral lines in (A) and (B) – then document the confusion and outcomes of the review

References to be reviewed to clarify if some of the claimed ancestral lines are valid:

  • Cumming – Comyn – 1, 2, 3, 4,
  • Duff – Grant – Douglas – Stewart – Bruce – MacDonald (Lord of the Isles: Alastair Alexander of Clan MacDonald of Keppoch) –  1, 2, 3, 4, 5,
  • Dunbar – Stewart  – Bruce – 1, 2, 3, 4,
  • Tulloch’s of Tannachie – Gordon – 1, 2, 3,

So it’s going to be a work in progress for quite a while!
